Stunning Kitchens That Are Worth The Risk

When interior designer NikiaGray was looking for a house in DC three years ago, most of the houses had white kitchens and grey walls which she considered “soul-less”. When she invested on a 19th century row house in Capitol Hill, Nikia decided to on a deep-blue, black and ivory kitchen. There are blue kitchen tiles that certainly look better than grey tiles.

Nikia worked with Shawn Buehler of Bennett Frank McCarthy Architects and contractors Ali Naim and Dominic Piwowarski of Evcon. They planned a curiosity cabinet towards the rear of the Victorian House and had the powder room and wall removed to create a more open design. Custom cabinets that were painted with Farrow & Ball’s blue-black “Railing” concealed all the appliances except for the Wolf range. Extra-deep, matte soapstone countertops and a farm sink provided adequate space for food preparation.

Folksy-patterned encaustic floor tiles from Vietnam were installed together with dark wood ceiling beams. Since there were plenty of dark colours inside the house, Nikia thought that silver or chrome will look cold so she opted for brushed brass hardware with the old fashioned but glamorous appeal.

Meanwhile, Sarah Khan Turner, a designer with Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath is so tired of grey. She designed an aqua-accented room that looks calm and creative for her open-minded client, Mary Ann Sack. Sack who moved to a Bethesda townhouse wanted a space that is quiet but inviting. Turner suggested a Zen-like blend of pale teal, white and wood grain cabinets with quartz countertops and backsplash.

Sack kept her Sub-zero stainless steel refrigerator but it was moved to a floating wall that holds a glass-enclosed fireplace. The kitchen flows seamlessly to the dining room and living room. Gleaming orb-pendant fixtures were installed to illuminate the kitchen island while black scones were used to create a dramatic effect.

There are different types of tiles that can make the home come to life from blue kitchen tiles to decorative feature tiles. There is a wide range of elegant colours to choose from that will match with your spatial requirements. The tiles are guaranteed to look great wherever you decide to install them.
