Bangkok On First Place As World’s Most Visited City

Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, is again the most visited city in the world, based from the 2016 Global Destination Cities Index yearly report of Mastercard.

Bangkok on first place

The ranking of Bangkok is no longer a surprise, since it has constantly been included in the top three most visited cities of the world ever since Mastercard began with its report. However, the rise resulted from a 13% increase in traveller arrivals during the period of 2015 to 2016. The only other city included in the top ten to post this similar big jump in terms of arrival percentages is the ninth ranked city of Tokyo.

Tourism is continually a solid point for Bangkok, which looks like it is untroubled by its 2014 military coup. Last year, the country already achieved its 2.4 trillion baht income coming from tourism, almost 5% beyond its 2.3 trillion baht target.

The growth in arrivals resulted mostly from its Government’s support in the tourism industry through promotional campaigns in different destinations and the changes in tourist visas, either free or reduced fees, including the extension of the long stay visa to 10 years from only 1 year.

In order for the country to accommodate this continuously increasing visitors, the Airports of Thailand Plc already planned to spend around 194 billion baht in the coming 15 years to increase the six airports to serve about 150 million passengers. There are upcoming plans to link the Don Mueang airport to the mass transit lines of Bangkok, then to Suvarnabhumi airport.

Even if the baht is strengthening against other major currencies, tourists still find great value in Bangkok.

Even if Bangkok is known for its heavy traffic, the taxi fares still remain of good value for a major city. There is also the MRT and BTS for other transport methods. The visitors also enjoy the exotic and sometimes spicy cuisine at only a fraction of the cost in their respective home countries.

Bangkok is truly a top ranking international city destination. Any visitor is not going to have difficulty finding a hotel to suit their preference or taste, whether that be a luxury hotel in Siam or a hotel near Bumrungrad hospital. Aside from this, there are numerous activities it can offer from its world class beaches to mountainous terrain, and its numerous temples.
