One day before the celebration of Chinese New Year in Thailand, many tourists came flocking to Phuket. Some are content to relax and swim on the beach while other hire yacht charter in Phuket in order to celebrate the festivities in style. The influx of tourists proved that the tourism in the province is bouncing back after there was a slight decline in number of arrivals due to the boat tragedy that occurred in 2018.
Since then, the local government of Phuket has been focusing on prioritizing the safety standards. The large number of tourists that visited for Chinese New Year, most of whom are from China, proved that the new measure is producing positive results. Prior to the unfortunate boat-capsizing incident, Phuket’s number one source of foreign travellers is China.
Tourism authority along with business owners are happy to see that things are starting to swing back as they have seen a high number of attendance during the Lantern Festival that was held in the municipality of Phuket.
Hoteliers have been waiting for this comeback since the announcement of the government that it is campaigning for a safer tourism industry. Some of them thought that by October of 2018 the tourists will pick up and some believed that it might happen during the New Year 2019 but that was not the case.
According to Thai Hotels Association’s chairman for the southern chapter, Kongsak Khuphongsakon, they were disappointed that many Chinese tourists decided not to fly back to Phuket for the Golden Week. Thankfully, the Chinese New Year celebration proved to be a different story altogether.
Based on data from hotel operators, the number of room bookings was higher from February 2 until February 10. The occupancy rate is now almost 90 per cent of the total 100,000 hotel rooms in the area.
The chairman of Phuket office’s Tourism Authority of Thailand, Kanokkittika Kritwutthikon, said that revenue for CNY is expected to reach four billion baht. While the number of tourists is not the same as 2018, still it is better compared to the second half of 2018. Tourists are now more confident with yacht charter in Phuket since the campaign of the government for a safer and more reliable is taking effect.
